Area 51

There are so many UFOs in my sewing room I am just going to start referring to it as "Area 51."

As I was cleaning and organizing the other day, I found this pattern...everything was cut out, still pinned to the pattern pieces....and completely missing the instructions. No chance of grabbing a cheap one at the fabric store (to get the instructions) because it is out of print!

So...I can't really comment on whether or not the instructions were any good, because I just muddled through and put it together however. It somewhat resembles a dress, so I must have been close!

Anyway, I used a poly ITY from Fashion Fabrics Club that I would be astounded if I paid more than $4.00 a yard for. It is super-slithery, but fortunately didn't roll up on the cut edges. It also stretches in both directions, so rather than interfacing the yoke/collar pieces, I just used a coordinating cotton woven for the inside layer, so it would be fully supported.

I also sewed the waist seams using only the serger, rather than sewing with a straight-stitch and then finishing the seam allowance with the serger. The reason that I did that is because I cut this out SOOOOO long ago, I was cutting a 16 instead of a 20...and I knew that I would need that waist seam to streeeeetch.....

Here is the finished dress:

A little boob-tastic, but hey, when you are my size...even turtlenecks have a tendency to boob-tasticness. For the lack of instructions, the wrong size, and the somewhat questionable fabric choice....

I'll probably wear it anyway!!

In other news, I am waiting for two shipments of fabric...I am planning my winter sewing, and for once...I am Sewing With A Plan! More to come....

I think it looks wonderful, both comfortable and flattering.

You say "boobtastic" like it's a bad thing?! "Figure flattering" is the P.C. way to say, you look damn hot, woman!

I love it! It looks great on you. Nice save from the UFO pile (and the Area 51 crack made me laugh out loud!).

I think I'm living in Area 51, if you can contain it to just one room, cheers to you! And cheers to your dress, I like the fabric much more on you, as a dress. Another vote in the "yea" column for boobtastic!

A really lovely dress.

I love this shape on you. Perhaps it is the print that makes you feel 'boobtastic' - I'd love to make this dress in black.

I like this dress on you! I don't think it overemphasises your bust. If anything, the busy print obscures them a bit. Well done you for finishing off a UFO.

Your dress is great! What surprises we find when we clean out our stuff!

Embrace the boobtasticness! ;-) I was just reading a fashion article on "How to make it look like you have curves." Great dress! I've had this one forever and never made it. It looks great on you.

Congratulations on finishing this dress without the instructions! What a fabulous find in the depths of 'Area 51' - if you have any more like this one lurking there you really should get it out and get it done because it looks really gorgeous.

I know photos only give us a frozen nanosecond and may not show us how a garment behaves, but frankly, I think this is a great style and that you look wonderful.

Ha! "Area 51"! That's good! Love your dress and boob-tastic is a good thing, I think. I'm the same, it doesn't matter what I wear, there they are....

Thank you for sharing your version of this dress. I have this pattern and I have the fabric I just have not worked up the nerve to start it. But now I may just get it out and start working on it. Yours looks great especially for not having any instructions!

The dress looks good from here. I have that pattern and can copy the instructions if you want. Just let me know. I think you may be on to something with the Area 51 - I may have to borrow that phrase sometime!

The dress is nice but I want to hear more about the sewing with a plan!

I think look very good shape, and in regard to the fabric pattern...you could turn it down. With a black jacket (maybe fitted around the waist), and a large shoulder bag would look lovely to go out shopping, for coffee or what ever you rather do on a relaxed weekend day :-) enjoy it!
